Remix Revival - 2018 schedule [confirmed]
I can now confirm the schedule for this year. The only change from the previous schedule is that signups will open two days earlier to accommodate my rl schedule; all the other dates have remained the same:
Signups begin: July 12
Signups end: July 29
Signups out by: August 5
Assignments due: September 9
Collection goes live: September 16
Remixers revealed: September 23
Madness signups begin: July 30
Madness goes live: September 17
Madness closes/remixers revealed: September 24
Here are the current changes/issues expected for this year's round:
Rule changes - There are two minor changes to the exchange rules for the 2018 round. The first is that participants will be allowed to denote a safe pseud, as long as it is pre-existing. The second is that if you offer an umbrella tag and have no possible recipients, I will automatically change your offers to include any individual tag beneath that umbrella, without emailing you to ask about it.
Mod availability - I will be out of town for the first week of signups (hence signups opening on the 12th instead of the 14th as previously planned). If you ask a question with a brief answer, I will be able to respond on my phone; if you ask a question requiring a more involved answer, it may have to wait until the 21st or 22nd.
The rule changes are open for discussion until signups open on July 12. Safe pseuds are being added by request, on a trial basis; if they become an issue, they'll be removed if I run the exchange in 2019. As for not emailing people if I have to change their offers, the people I had to email last year mostly seemed to think that I was going to change their offers as needed anyway, so I may as well save myself a step during an already hectic period. I'm open to adding/changing other rules if I think it would benefit the exchange, but again, any discussion must happen prior to July 12.
If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a comment to this post (DW), send this account an ask (tumblr), or email me (remixrevivalmod AT gmail).

(Anonymous) 2018-07-15 10:33 am (UTC)(link)Question: if I finish a work after signing up but before assignments go out, will the work be remixable? What if I finish it after assignments are out, but that's the fandom I matched on?

If you post something new after signups are over, and it's not a WIP/collaboration/etc, and you don't already have the max safe works in your signup, you may mention in your author's notes that it is safe. If you do this, you must contact me right away so I have a record of that work being safe. If you are already at your max safe works or do not contact me as soon as you post it to let me know, I won't be able/willing to do anything about it if someone does remix it.
I hope this makes sense! Thanks for your patience. :)

Hi! So. I have a question about this. In the past, when one matched on an umbrella fandom, the understanding was that one could switch up the remix to any fandom under that umbrella. (I.e., if someone had requested "Sherlock Holmes and Related Fandoms" for remixing, that was tacit permission take one of their "Sherlock (TV)" stories and remix it as "Elementary (TV)", since both were under the umbrella.) But with this rule change, if I offer "Sherlock Holmes and Related" but you edit my sign-up to match on someone who requested "Sherlock (TV)", am I required to keep the resulting remix within "Sherlock (TV)"? One of the points of offering the umbrella, for me, had been the tacit permission to remix the under-fandoms into something else under the umbrella, so I wouldn't get stuck in an under-fandom I had no competency with.

That said, I do like the idea of this, it's just that it's a little late in the signup process to make major rule changes/additions, and I do think this is the kind of thing that should be made explicit in the remix guidelines. I'm not going to make any promises about allowing it next year since there may be cons I haven't thought of yet, but I'm adding it to the list of things to consider.

And thank you for considering this for next year!

A quick question, just so I know if I need to update you later - I'm currently participating in a reverse bang which will be posted after sign-ups close here. As it's a reverse bang, the fic is based on someone else's art, but I'm not entirely sure how we're putting it up on AO3 yet, so I'm not sure if it would be considered a collaboration?
It's not a problem if not, I have enough room to denote it as a safe work, I just thought I would ask so I could let you know if necessary, as I'm not really comfortable with the idea of someone remixing a fic that was deliberately based on someone else's work, especially without their permission. :)

So, do I understand it correctly that the request is not so much "Please remix a work in one of these fandoms" as "Please remix a work, here are some of my fandoms you may have heard of", and the result may be a remix that is not in any of the fandoms listed in the request?

Is treating allowed if you're not signed up?
(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)I saw in the FAQ that you could treat your assigned writer but there no was no mention of treats in general.
If I follow the wishes of a signed-up writer and don't touch anything they've marked safe is it permissible to still treat even without being signed up?
I understand that this exchange isn't quite the same as a general exchange of completely "new" stories so I wanted to check with you first.
Re: Is treating allowed if you're not signed up?
The two collections are completely separate, so the only way you would be able to treat someone from the main exchange would be if they signed up for Madness as well.
