An introduction, and some news on 2019!

Hello! Some good news: after speaking with [personal profile] slightweasel, I've offered to take over modding this exchange, so that means Remix Revival will be running in 2019. Nice to meet you!

I'm planning on running the 2019 round over the same general time period, and I've put together a tentative schedule below, but I'm open to feedback on it from anyone who would be interested in participating. Any general feedback about last year's round is very welcome as well - what went particularly well for you? Is there anything you would like to see changed?

Two important housekeeping notes:

- The Dreamwidth account, Tumblr, and parent collection on AO3 will stay the same, as [personal profile] slightweasel has passed them all down to me. However, the email address to reach me is now mod4remixrevival@gmail.com. Blame gmail and their weird notifications.

- Deadlines are now in Mountain Standard Time (because that's where your new mod lives).

And finally, my (again, very tentative) schedule for 2019:

Signups begin: July 1
Signups end: July 20 11:59 PM MST
Assignments out by: July 27
Assignments due: September 1, 11:59 PM MST
Collection opens: September 16
Remixers revealed: September 23

Feel free to reach out to me via email, or leave your comments directly on this post. Thanks, and here's to a fun remix round in 2019! 🥂

hi! I see we're . coming close to signups & I'm wondering if the rules will be the same this year, with "safe" fandom, works etc?
PS thanks for volunteering to keep the exchange alive

I have several fics that spawned from prompts, some of which are more detailed than others, with "my most piesed possession" and "you're full of something (but it ain't love—right?)" on the more detailed end prompt-wise. I expect these are not collaborations? But something like "some hearts have the stars on their side" or "Cover Up", both of which I wrote by myself as a sequel to someone else's fic, I expect those are collaborations for this purpose? (If not, "Cover Up" at least needs to be marked safe, I already annoyed one of the creative forces behind the fic it's a sequel to by writing it without checking with her first...)

If the series already exists but only has one work in, will marking that safe be my safe series or one of my three safe works?

I'm going to guess the answer to this is no, but can I safe-fandom out everything in one fandom except the crossovers? Because filter my fics to include only Ancient Greek Religion and Lore and there's fifteen, twelve of which I don't want remixed and the other three are also tagged with song fandoms because I wrote them for [community profile] jukebox_fest, and I would argue that they are primarily fics of the song fandoms and I am cool with those three being remixable. (If those three have to be marked safe in order to keep the other twelve safe, that's fine.)

I'm only planning on signing up with Miraculous Ladybug—if I safe out the EllieMurasaki pseud and Ancient Greek Religion & Lore, I can then only qualify in ML, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and October Daye anyway. (It's just that the only stories I have in Ancient Greek Religion & Lore that I'm okay with being remixed are the three I wrote for Jukebox.)

Thanks!

—wait, could I qualify for October Daye? I have eight fics there, six of which I wrote for a lightning round of [community profile] pod_together. I don't think the podficcer had any creative input on the text, but that was five years ago and I don't entirely recall, and the podficcer is certainly listed as a co-creator on each work. So I don't think those are remixable?

I'm thinking of adding Yu-Gi-Oh! to my offers for easier matching, since the sign-up summary shows Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Anime & Manga) at 1 request 1 offer and those may well be the same person. It occurs to me I should check this, because I have twelve works that show up when filtering to just that canonical. Two are under 100 words. Three are my safe series. Four I tagged Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 0 for good reason†. Of the remaining three, only one is over 500 words.

So if we go strictly by the AO3 canonical, I qualify in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Anime & Manga). Problem is the AO3 canonical is full of shit, and if we separate Season 0 from what people are much more likely to be familiar with, I qualify in neither.

Modly opinion on whether I should add Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Anime & Manga) to my sign-up?

† The first seven volumes of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga were adapted into the anime that gets referred to as Season 0 or Series 0. Subsequent volumes were adapted into the anime that exists in English dub. One character who has very little presence in the manga and does not exist in the second anime is a major character in Season 0. A lot of character arcs in the second anime make sense if and only if certain character arcs in the first anime never happened; those character arcs do parallel character arcs in the manga, but not in a way that makes for incoherent characterization if only looking at the manga. And there are plot arcs in each anime that aren't related to the manga at all. So we have three distinct continuities under this one canonical tag.

Why would I try to get a modly opinion on whether I qualify to sign up to be remixed in a fandom I'm offering to remix?

So Miraculous Ladybug is premised on, exactly three characters beside Marinette canonically know Marinette is Ladybug (Adrien is not among them), and exactly three characters beside Adrien canonically know Adrien is Chat Noir (Marinette is not among them). Thus, between these two characters there are four different ships assuming neither knows the other's identity, plus the ship where they both know they both know both identities, plus variations on those themes depending on who knows what. There are ship wars. AO3 used to have four / tags for these characters and now has one.

How might this play into "don't change the pairing"?

Because I can see convincing arguments for both "if it's Ladrien without Marichat, it needs to stay Ladrien without Marichat, because Ladrien and Marichat are totally different dynamics" and "it's the same two characters so the difference between Ladrien and Marichat is immaterial". Going with the former answer could impact remixes of esp the "happens before remixee" and "happens after remixee" varieties in ways the latter answer can't, because a favorite trope in ML fandom is Identity Reveal. If it's important that a remix of a pre-reveal Adrienette-only fic stay Adrienette-only, then the remix must also be pre-reveal.

I'm hoping for "it's the same AO3-canonical pairing tag regardless", but I don't know.

Question: if I have a non-AO3 account with older fic that's not on AO3, am I required to include it?
