Hi everyone - first of all, I'd like to apologize for not being able to reply to those of you who contacted me about this year's exchange. The reason is a pretty terrible one, I'm afraid - I recently lost my little brother very unexpectedly and needless to say, everything in my life other than family pretty much disappeared from my priority list.

So I hope you can all understand why I'm not up to run this exchange this year and am unsure about the future as well. I wouldn't want it to die out, so if anyone is willing to help or take it over completely, let me know. Thank you everyone for your understanding. (I promise I'm usually more eloquent but, well.)

It's clear to me now that this is a little bit more of a time commitment than I could afford this year, and knowing myself and my life that's not likely to change next year either. I would like to keep this exchange running, especially since it's such a longstanding fandom tradition but I could really use some help! New Date for Collection Opening + 2 Remaining Pinch Hits

Hi everyone - due to these lingering pinch hits, I've decided to push back the date of the collection's opening to give everyone more time. I'm sorry to have to do this, but I'd much rather delay the opening than leave several people without a remix! I know this isn't a traditional gift exchange, but it still doesn't seem fair to me. I understand it might be frustrating for those of you who have been ready to reveal your work for awhile now, and all I can do is hope you'll understand.

The new date for the reveal of the collection is Tuesday, October 19. I'll plan to open the collection at 8AM MST like originally planned, unless something changes. You'll have until then to complete any pinch hits (including the below unclaimed). The deadline to reveal the creators will be pushed back as well, to October 23 (8AM MST).

On the bright side, there's more time now for you to edit your work, and/or create new remixes for Remix Madness! (*Simple Minds voice* Don't you...forget about me...)

Hey everyone! Due to the number of people asking for extensions, I've decided to make it simple for everyone and push back the deadline that works will be due. The new deadline for works is 11:59 PM MST on October 6. This includes both regular assignments and claimed pinch hits. At this time the date for the works reveal has not been changed, but I'm not currently ruling that out.

We currently still have 3 remaining pinch hits. As usual, comment with your ao3 name to claim!

Sign ups closed last night at 11:59 MST, and I'll be going through for a last check today to make sure everything looks good. Matching shouldn't take long, and assuming everyone is matchable, assignments should be out either late tonight or tomorrow morning, but I'll let you know if that changes! And secondly, Remix Madness is now open for prompting and filling - remember, this is a prompt meme version of the challenge, so no rules on safe works, minimum word count, number of qualifying fics, etc. There's no obligation to create a remix if you sign up, and no deadline. I still won't be enforcing DNWs (other than safe works). You can fill as many or as few prompts as you like. This is a separate prompt meme run parallel to the main challenge, so you don't have to be signed up for the main exchange to participate in Madness, or vice versa. Just an extra free for all version - have fun!

Discord Server + Some Reminders!

Hey everyone - first of all thank you to all the new people signing up this year, and welcome! I realize the rules/FAQ could use some refreshing but frankly I haven't had the time or energy to devote to it, and since I am running this thing on my own I truly appreciate your patience. If you're not familiar with the history of this exchange, it was a continuation of the older remix exchange, Remix Redux (which was itself a continuation of a version of it on LJ back in the day), which I took over from another mod a few years ago. So if you run across something in the rules that's confusing, it's probably my fault for not catching it! Long story short.

As we enter the last few days of sign ups, here are some reminders that I thought would be helpful:

Matching is 1 fandom + 1 medium (fic remixed as art, art remixed as fic, fic remixed as fic, or art remixed as art), and that's all. So all the fandoms you're eligible in should be combined into one request! Same with offers. You have the ability to make two, in case you have so many fandoms that you exceed AO3's limit of 20, and/or you wanted to separate different fandoms with different mediums (i.e., Request 1 is all the fandoms you want remixed as art, and Request 2 is all the fandoms you want remixed as fic, etc).

That being said, once someone is assigned to remix you, they are allowed to remix ANY of your works. So let's say you signed up for Harry Potter, and someone gets matched to you because of that fandom, but they poke through your profile and find something you did eight years ago for a tiny book fandom, and your ONE work is the ONLY WORK to this day in that fandom's tag - they're allowed to remix that! Everything you've created that isn't marked as safe, or a collaboration or a remix itself, is FAIR GAME.

So it's important for you to signify in your sign up which of your works ARE remixes (an interpretation you did of someone else's work), a collaboration (a work created with another person), and/or marked as safe. You are limited to 3 safe works, 1 safe fandom, 1 safe series, and 1 safe pseud. You can have one of each of all of these, if you so choose. Remember that you can choose an umbrella fandom to mark as safe (so if you mark MCU as safe, that would cover works in Iron Man, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Wandavision, etc etc etc)

A remix challenge is not a gift exchange! Remember that this is an opportunity for the creator to have fun and stretch their skills - it's not intended to be a gift tailored to your tastes! This is the reason why there's a limit on how many things you can mark as safe, and why the remixer can choose literally anything to remix, even if you didn't sign up with that fandom. The only thing your remixer will be beholden to keep is the fandom, the basic plot, and the pairing - a "remix" might be a completely different take/interpretation on the work you created in the first place, and that's sort of what makes it fun!

This is also why I will not be enforcing DNWs. Again, it's not a gift! Be honest with yourself about this one; if you don't think you could handle it if someone remixed your work and included something you don't want to see or read about, then this is probably not the exchange for you.

To reiterate, because this is not an exchange for gifts, you are not allowed to indicate preferences of any kind in your sign up. If I see this when sign ups close (I won't be editing anything in sign ups until then), I will remove it! This includes likes/dislikes, pairings, tropes, kinks, whatever. Be brave! Embrace the unknown!

AND A NOTE FOR ARTISTS:
If you created art for a reverse bang challenge, then that art is eligible to be remixed. It was an original work made by you! However, art created for someone else's fic, such as for a big bang challenge or something similar, is not eligible. Since that's technically an interpretation of someone else's work, I would consider that art to be a remix, and therefore it's ineligible. I realize there might be grey areas, so if you're unsure get in touch with me and I'll make a judgment call!

(This is obviously the reverse for writers: something written for a reverse bang would be an interpretation of someone else's work, and therefore ineligible. However, a work you wrote that someone later created art for? Fair game!)

AND A NOTE ON POD_TOGETHER:
I will let you decide on your own whether stories written for pod_together (a challenge which pairs together podficcers and fic writers) count as a collaboration or not. In my opinion it's a bit of a grey area whether stories written for this challenge are original works that were later "remixed" (with a podfic) or a collaborative project. Nobody knows more about the creative process of a piece than the creator. If you think your podficcer partner was a creative collaborator insofar that they deserve credit as a co-author, then I would mark that piece ineligible. But I'm not going to police that too heavily; please take this on good faith, respect your past creative partners, and if you need help making a call about something, let me know.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
Someone requested that I make a Discord server, so have at it! Caveat is that I have very little experience with modding on Discord, so please be nice to me. (Also if there's anything on there you think is weird/want me to change, let me know and I'll fix it!) I'll edit the pinned post here on the DW with the invite link.

Sign Ups Open + Rules Refresher!

Sign ups are open! They'll stay open until August 23 at 11:59 PM, MST. Remix madness sign ups will begin on August 24.

A few reminders:

To sign up, you must have a minimum of three (3) 500-word fics, a minimum of five (5) 100-word fics, or a minimum of three (3) drawings in each requested fandom. Your qualifying fic/art should already be at the URL you provide when you sign up.
You may include up to 20 fandoms per request; it is not necessary to have more than one request unless you have a reason for splitting your offers (like you want to receive fic for some fandoms but would prefer art for other fandoms).
You may leave the text box blank if you don't have any safe works/previous remixes.
If you're a writer, you want to choose Fic Remixed As Fic and/or Fic Remixed As Art, depending on your preferences. If you're an artist, you want to choose Art Remixed As Art and/or Art Remixed As Fic. If you have enough qualifying fic AND art in your requested fandoms, you can do both. If you have fic and art in different fandoms, or want to request different things in different fandoms, you can add a second request.
The URL you include for your work MUST be easily navigated by fandom. This means you must either link to your AO3 dashboard/works page, OR an index elsewhere that has your works sorted by fandom. Unless you have only/primarily written/drawn in a single fandom, you should NOT link to a general fic/art tag on your tumblr. The reason for this is that while your remixer can do something in a different fandom than you matched on, they must still be able to easily find your works in the fandom you matched on.
You are limited to 3 individual safe works, 1 safe series, and/or 1 safe fandom per signup (not per request). Safe fandoms may be an umbrella fandom or "all media types" fandom.
All fandoms in your request must be AO3 canonical tags. Whenever possible, choose the most unique version of your fandom (i.e., "Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)" instead of "Marvel Cinematic Universe.")

2021 Update!

First of all, apologies for the time lapse! I've had a lot on my plate in real life lately, but I'm down to run this exchange again for 2021. Obviously it will be running a bit later than last year, so I've drawn up a tentative schedule that (hopefully) won't interfere too much with the yearly holiday exchanges.
